Dear Henry,
Dear Henry,
This will be the last time I write to you before your birthday. For the past ten months I've gotten to experience something amazing; something that I'd read and heard about from countless friends and family, seen on television shows and movies, studied in books, but I never understood it until I experienced it. Being pregnant is one of the most beautiful journeys I've ever been on. For 40 weeks I've grown you; half of your dad, and half of me. I've watched my stomach expand, and in turn, watched you grow, from a little tiny speck inside of my belly to a full-grown baby, ready to come out into the world. I've felt you move, kick, turn and toss. I've felt emotional, overcome with the idea that your papa and I have created this life, this person...you. There's been days where I just sit and look down at you, dreaming of all of the possibilities housed right inside of my body. I've nourished you, kept you safe, rubbed my stomach in the hopes that you could sense the love I was trying to send to you, and I've told you "I love you" more times than I can count.
The moment you are born, you are on your own path, but your father and I will always be with you every step of the way. These past months have been the happiest of our entire life, and I am sure that in the months and years to come, in the forever of our days, happiness is waiting for us.
As this phase ends, another begins. And although you won't physically be inside of my body anymore, I feel like I will always carry a part of you with me, as your mother. Wherever I go, and wherever you go, your heart is in mine.
So with that, I leave you with one of my favorite poems by e.e. cummings to commemorate these 40 weeks:
i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)
I love you sweet boy, and I cannot wait to meet you.
Love,
Your Mama

Saturday link love/baby update
Good morning everyone! Quick update on baby: we had a doctor's appointment yesterday, and besides the pressure to induce me on Monday (hello, that's just four days past my due date), it was okay. We learned that I am 2cm dilated and 50% effaced, so progress is definitely happening. If you follow me on Twitter you'd have a lot more updates than that (ha!), but last night, after a week of horrible, little to no sleep, contractions, and overall major uncomfortable-ness, I slept a solid 10 hours! Insane. I feel great today and from what my girlfriends are telling me, perhaps this is my body's way of prepping for going into labor. Let's cross our fingers! So today Hank and I are enjoying one last Saturday of "just us," and going to lunch and to see a movie. I've really been wanting to see Morning Glory, so Hank has graciously agreed to see it, even though I know he doesn't want to. At all. Oh, the joys of being pregnant and getting your way! ;)
In other news, I thought I would share some of the great links I've stumbled across this week:
- this delicious overnight oatmeal via Framed. How delicious does this stuff look? My crock pot is one happy appliance since we've been using it more, and this oatmeal is definitely happening soon. I think I may add in my yummy apple treat to make it even more cold weather appropriate.
- kind of dying over Lauren Moffatt's spring lookbook/collection "The Honeymooner," found via Elsie's blog. I can't even pick a favorite. James and Marcella blogged about it too, it's just that good!
- Mumford & Sons. This video. I can't stop watching/listening/loving.
- Liz's winter shopping list...which include some of my FAVORITE moccasins ever, from the talented Katie at Darlingtonia!
- Holly's classic hair inspiration! It kinda-sorta makes me want to chop off my long hair to my shoulders but I think I'll just live vicariously through these pretty photos from awhile.
- these museum-inspired wedding invitations via The Loveliest Day. I swear, the longer I'm married the more I want to get married again. Henry, watch out, because I have a feeling I may get a little too into planning your birthday parties. I can't get enough of all of the amazing ideas I see everyday, and Melissa over at TLD doesn't help one bit with that! ;)
- this awesome self-love list from Gala Darling. It's an old one I've saved for awhile, but I really love revisiting it for fresh inspiration.
- Apple Cider doughnuts. Need I say more?

Friday prettiness
Happy Friday! Still no baby. I've been having very serious talks with him though, so hey, you never know- maybe today or tonight he will decide to come on out! In the meantime, I wanted to share the photography of one of my gal pals, Ms. Morgan Olivia Newton (you can click here to check out her Tattoo Tuesday feature from way back when!). Morgan is extremely talented, and I often find myself just looking through her photo shoots in awe, getting lost in the people, the places, and the stories they tell. I love the way she perceives the world, and even more so, I love how she allows us a glimpse into that perception through her gorgeous work. Today I am sharing just a few beautiful photographs that she's snapped, but I really, really recommend you check out her blog for a million more.Morgan lives in California, and can be booked for photo shoots, and mainly works in portraiture and head shots (email morgannphoto@gmail.com). She also recently started working with a new tattoo magazine called Tattoo Flux, which will be out in the new year. So keep your eyes peeled!

A Slice of...Detroit, Michigan!
I feel so lucky to be able to give everyone a little taste of Detroit. Thank you to Danielle for this opportunity. I’m Amanda – a high school English teacher, wife, baker, blog reader. I’ve grown up and lived in Michigan all my life. Michiganders can get a bad rap for many reasons, but I would love to shine some light on the good stuff - the little things that can bring enjoyment to us that live here and make us take pride in our city, even when in some ways it’s crumbling around us.
This is me at the high school I teach at. Isn’t it amazingly beautiful? It was built in 1926 and was the first high school in the US to cost more than a million dollars. Those large windows on the front of the building shine light into library where Henry Ford used to hold meetings surrounded carved wood walls and a large fireplace. I am lucky to be able to come here for work each day.
Let me start off with how my husband and I like to start every weekend, a great breakfast. One of the best places to eat is a little place up Woodward called Mae’s. Last year our friend Sean (above) and his wife Jess opened this place up. They have everything you could ever want, made from scratch, in the cutest little retro cafe ever. Mae’s serves Avalon Bakery Bread, Great Lakes coffee, and the list of local foods and drinks goes on. Last weekend we stopped in and I enjoyed the potato latkes served with sour cream and homemade applesauce. What?! How many places serve homemade, cinnamon spiced applesauce? Yum. http://www.maesdetroit.com/
Another great stop on a weekend morning is the Eastern Market. This place has been selling fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, and baked goods since 1891. They recently built beautiful, huge sheds to enclose a lot of the open-air market and this allows for them to be open year round. Every time I go there, I have a renewed sense of energy for what’s going on in the city. There’s locally grown food and people are everywhere. That’s my husband above buying a bushel of brussel sprouts. MMMmmm. And below that you’ll see me buying Avalon Bakery cookies, some buttery almond croissants, and the cutest little coffee car. By now you should be getting a feel for what my husband and I enjoy – pretty places and good food. http://www.
This store is A-ma-zing. It’s located right in Eastern Market’s square, so you can stop in every weekend after you pick up your fruits and veggies. R. Hirt Jr. has everything from imported cheeses to handmade baskets. Last weekend we picked up a couple small gifts for friends and some delicious sage infused cheese. I love cooking with sage but don’t always have it in the house. Now, anytime I want that sage flavor, I can just grate a little bit of this cheese into a dish and, as my husband says, it tastes like a Christmas tree. But I think he means it in the very best way.
There’s so much history here. And so much beautiful architecture too. When you see it all, sometimes you have to see past the shattered glass and decaying structure. Or maybe those details are part of the beauty here. This is Michigan Central Station where the last train pulled away in 1988. You can see this landmark stand above other buildings with its ornate columns and broken windows. The mere size of it reminds us all of a once thriving city. It’s easy to see the destruction around us and watch depressing stories stream the news, but there is so much beauty here.
If you pass the train station you can head into a wonderful area, Mexican Town. Something you’ll notice when you look around is the number of families walking the sidewalks. Mexican Town seems to have been able to hold onto a strong, tight-knit community even through the hard economic times. They’ve also been able to hold onto their tasty foods. There are two bakeries I love to visit here – La Gloria Bakery and Mexican Town Bakery. We go there to get the freshest tortillas, tamales, churros, tres leches, and coke - made with real sugar.
Another area of the city that has been able to hold onto its cultural heritage is Hamtramck, an area with a large Polish population. This little chunk of the city has a special place in my heart because it’s where I lived when I started dating my husband. I got my first teaching job, was living cheaply, and was curing all my hangovers with the most delicious dill pickle soup a girl has ever tasted. Going to the Polish Village Café feels like you’re going into your Grandma’s basement to eat her homemade pierogies filled with potato, kraut and mushrooms, and farmer’s sweet cheese. If you haven’t had fresh pierogies, you’ve never really eaten pierogies at all.
I know this isn’t a cooking feature, but I love to think about how food goes from farmer’s market to our plates. To me, this represents what the city is able to provide us with. And look how yummy that is? I made butternut squash and pea risotto. Usually I throw some sage in, so this time I shredded up that vibrant marbled cheese right into the risotto. And instead of stopping there, I decided to coat some in flower and fry them. This was my first time trying to make risotto cakes and they came out wonderfully. The herby sage flavor definitely added to the fall comfort flavors. Then I chopped all those brussel sprouts off the stalk and roasted them in a pan with some apples and bacon. Once they were tender I tossed them in red wine vinegar. My husband was a happy man that night.
There really is so much more to this city. Young people, artists, musicians, everyday people, are trying to reverse the effects of years of hardship. The museums are wonderful, there’s urban farming blossoming, new shops and restaurants are trying to get rolling daily. It’s easy for even Michiganders to write off Detroit and not pay attention to all the culture, growth, and life happening here.

Morning ritual
I wake up quite early with my handsome husband, make him breakfast, and see him off to work.
After breakfast I've been lacing up my sneakers and heading out for a nice, long walk through our neighborhood. It's beautiful here and since we live at a high elevation the mountain air is crisp and clean.
After the walk I come home and play with this little lady for awhile.
Then I'll make some tea, and curl up with a book in bed until lunchtime.
So, this is definitely my pre-baby relaxation morning ritual. I can't imagine if every morning was like this...but it would be quite nice I suppose! I'm looking forward to it changing any day though, and it will be interesting to see what my mornings look like then. No baby to a baby is a whole new world, and as scary as it seems, I/we are so ready! Tomorrow is my due date so I'm just hoping Henry will naturally arrive sooner than later. Come onnnn, baby!
Mommy blog love!
1) It's a Wonderful Life!

I came across Allie's blog while looking through the Top Baby Blogs list and absolutely loved that her little guy was named Henry too! Allie's family is absolutely darling- she posts quite often and her posts typically highlight her daily life, trips they take, the most adorable pictures of her Henry and her hubby, and just paint such a picture of happiness and positivity. I really enjoy reading Allie's blog, and I know you will too. Plus, look at that little face! He's seriously the cutest thing ever.
2) Her Sea of Love

Oh how I love this blog. It's a very recent find for me, but I could swear that I'd come across it before. This is the blog of an adorable mama-to-be, Sarah, and her journey to meeting her little one. I adore all of her photos and writing (she writes lovely "Letter to Baby" posts), and I feel that whether you're a Mom, an expectant Mom, or nothing of the sort, you too will really enjoy the almost dream-like quality that is Her Sea of Love. I'm so happy to make this blog one of my daily reads.
3) She Breathes Deeply

Mandy is the cutest, her blog makes me super happy, and she seems like the kindest soul around. I've posted about Mandy before, when she did a Tattoo Tuesday feature awhile back, and since then I have been an avid reader of her sweet blog. She's another expectant mama who is waiting on the birth of her daughter, and she writes about everything from crafts to home life, dreams for her little one, stories about love, and her journey with yoga. Inspiring, upbeat, and worth a follow!
4) Dear Baby

Time and time again it was recommended that I check this blog out- so many of my wonderful readers (hey that's you!) told me how much I would love reading Melissa's writing, how much she and I had in common...and it took me awhile to get over there, but when I did...SWOON! What a lovely blog, beautiful family, and excellent writing. Melissa is an old soul with a big heart, and this is so evident in everything she puts out into the world. Dear Baby has a large readership as well, so many of you may already read it, but if you don't, I really recommend you head over there, I promise you'll love it. :)
If you do head over their way, let them know I sent you, and if you're inspired to do so, think about posting a list of some of your favorite blogs! Nothing is better than supporting one another in this great big world. :)
Have a great Tuesday! <3

Tattoo Tuesday V.44

Name and blog name: Megan Fay http://ineversaidiwasdeep.
Age: 19
Occupation: Unemployed
Age of first tattoo: 19
Favorite tattoo: I really can't choose! I love them both!
Featured tattoo/location: My Fred Perry laurel wreath on my upper left arm
Artist/shop/location of feature tattoo: Michael Larson at Painted Temple in Provo, Utah

1) Tell us about your featured tattoo- is there a background story or special meaning? Why did you choose this particular piece of art?
2) Do you have any other tattoos? If so, what do you have and where?
I have one other tattoo- the words "Let There be Love" on the side of my foot. I just barely got it done and I absolutely love it. It's the title of one of my favorite Oasis songs and it's such a sweet sentiment. This one was also made by Michael Larson at Painted Temple in Provo.
3) Do you plan on getting more?

4) How do your family and friends feel about your tattoo(s)? Have you run into any adversity or negativity because of them? Do you have a significant other? Does he/she have tattoos?
I'm originally from California but currently live in Utah, which is a very conservative place, so I have definitely felt negativity from people. I get an awful lot of rude stares and all for one little tattoo! Just imagine if I had more tattoos, goodness! It's almost as if people think that having tattoos makes you a bad person and that is just not the case at all. Unfortunately there will always be sheltered people out there that don't appreciate your uniqueness, but you just can't let it get to you. They're never worth the trouble!
